Weigh In for trade justice
The end of the 24-hour lobby will be marked at events and gatherings all over the country with a mass act of solidarity. At exactly 12 noon on Saturday 28 June, campaigners will stand together holding up sets of scales - our symbol for trade justice.
A Weigh In can be any size or type of event, from a simple photo opportunity to a rally or festival involving hundreds of people and lots of other activities. So that they are strongly linked, each Weigh In should include some common elements:
-
12 noon on Saturday 28 June
-
in silence, people hold up scales - these could be any kind of scales, old or new, such as bathroom or kitchen scales, grocer's scales, or giant paper maché model scales!
Planning your Weigh In
Given the large number of organisations involved in the TJM, you may well have a lot of people, with a range of talents, all willing to help organise a spectacular event. So
get together with other local
campaigners, decide early on what you want to achieve - and plan accordingly.
Think about
Location: Outside the MP's surgery? A High Street stall? A park or town square?
Visuals: We hope to get hundreds of powerful photos - incorporating the scales symbol - into papers and in front of delegates at the WTO Summit. Brainstorm ideas on how to create the best picture opportunity.
Letters: Get participants and passers-by to write letters to the Prime Minister
Safety: If you are running a large event in a public space, inform the police and other authorities as early as possible and consider safety aspects and stewarding.
Publicity: Download posters and graphics from this site
Whatever you choose to do, you will be part of a huge action taking place all over the UK - and beyond! So make sure you take photographs - and send one to the TJM to be part of a giant photo-montage that world leaders will see at the WTO meeting in Mexico.
