Trade Justice Movement welcomes New EU Trade Commissioner

The Trade Justice Movement welcomes the confirmation of Catherine Ashton as new EU Trade Commissioner. A fresh start is sorely needed to repair relations damaged by Peter Mandelson’s bullying approach – especially to the raft of free trade deals currently being negotiated with developing countries, including some of the poorest, most vulnerable and poverty stricken countries in the world. At her hearing with European Parliamentarians on Monday, Ashton promised a ‘new style’ of negotiations and to begin her tenure by listening to the concerns of developing countries. This is very welcome and TJM looks forward to working with the new Commissioner as she embarks on this process and calls on her to be prepared to match her promised change in style with a change in policy approach to respond to developing country concerns.
