Chancellor to speak on Trade Justice
Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, will deliver a special address on Global Poverty
on Sunday 26 September, at St Bartholomew's Church, Brighton as part of the Vote for Trade
Justice on the first day of the Labour Party conference.
Ahead of his address to conference, Mr Brown will outline his plans to tackle world poverty -
focussing on issues of trade, debt relief and aid.
He is expected to put trade at the heart of the debate on poverty reduction and recognise the
need for vulnerable people to be protected from the full force of world markets.
He is also expected to heavily criticise the scandal and waste of the Common Agricultural Policy.
The event has been organised by the Trade Justice Movement (TJM), a coalition of leading aid
and development agencies campaigning to change the rules of trade to safeguard the needs of
poor people and the environment.
Mr Brown will be introduced by Dr Daleep Mukarji, director of Christian Aid. The event will be
chaired by Richard Miller, director of Action Aid UK.
Dr Mukarji will say: 'Trade must be made to work for poor people. For that they need trade justice not unfettered free trade'.
'The lives and well-being of millions of poor, hard-working families around the world depend on it.'
