As the financial crisis has demonstrated, global economic rules aren’t working. Unfair trade rules are part of the problem, and Europe ’s policies are making things worse. New free trade deals being negotiated by Europe will harm the poorest and most vulnerable people in Africa, Asia and Latin America, destroying jobs, livelihoods and local industries, and increasing environmental exploitation. Developing countries must be given the flexibility to use economic policies that benefit people and the environment, not big business.

If these free trade deals are allowed to continue, millions will be pushed further into poverty, losing their jobs and livelihoods and seeing their public services and their environment continue to deteriorate. As a European citizen, I would like to see a new approach to trade that truly supports long-term, sustainable development around the world. The time has come to turn European trade policy around.
